How to Import and Export in DaVinci Resolve – Complete Guide

DaVinci Resolve is one of the most powerful video editing tools available, but to create stunning videos, you first need to import your footage properly and later export it in the right format.
This guide will walk you through both importing and exporting in DaVinci Resolve like a professional editor.

1. How to Import Media in DaVinci Resolve

Before you start editing, your first step is to bring your media files into the project.

Step 1 – Create a New Project

  1. Open DaVinci Resolve.
  2. Click on New Project.
  3. Give your project a clear name (e.g., Travel_Vlog_2025).
  4. Hit Create.

Pro Tip: Naming projects clearly helps with organization when working on multiple edits.

Step 2 – Open the Media Page

  • Look at the bottom of DaVinci Resolve and click the Media tab.
  • This is where you will see your Media Pool.

Step 3 – Import Footage

There are two main ways to import:

  1. Drag & Drop Method
    • Open your computer’s file explorer (Finder on Mac, File Explorer on Windows).
    • Drag your videos, images, or audio files directly into the Media Pool.
  2. Menu Method
    • Go to File → Import → Media.
    • Select your files and click Open.

Step 4 – Organize Your Media

  • Create bins/folders in the Media Pool for:
    • Video Clips
    • Audio & Music
    • Graphics/Logos
  • Rename files for easy reference.

Pro Tip: Well-organized media saves hours during editing, especially on large projects.

2. How to Export in DaVinci Resolve

Once your editing is complete, it’s time to deliver your project in the right format for YouTube, Instagram, TV, or clients.

Step 1 – Go to the Deliver Page

  • Click the Deliver tab at the bottom right of the screen.

Step 2 – Choose an Export Preset

DaVinci Resolve gives you ready-made export presets:

  • YouTube (1080p or 4K)
  • Vimeo
  • Twitter
  • Custom Export

If you’re unsure, YouTube 1080p is a safe choice for most online videos.

Step 3 – Adjust Export Settings

For professional results:

  • Format: MP4
  • Codec: H.264
  • Resolution: Match your project settings (1080p or 4K)
  • Frame Rate: Same as your footage
  • Quality: Restrict to:
    • 10,000 kbps for 1080p
    • 20,000 kbps for 4K

Step 4 – Choose Export Location

  • Click Browse to select where you want the final file saved.

Step 5 – Add to Render Queue

  • Click Add to Render Queue (right side panel).
  • Click Start Render.

Pro Export Tips:

  • Always preview the rendered file before sending it to clients or uploading.
  • If you’re editing for Instagram or TikTok, change the resolution to 1080×1920 (vertical) in project settings before export.
  • For cinematic projects, export in DNxHR or ProRes for higher quality.

Final Words

Importing and exporting in DaVinci Resolve might seem basic, but getting it right is the foundation of a smooth editing workflow.
Proper importing keeps your media organized, while correct exporting ensures your final video looks great on any platform.
